Leopold von Eltester

Otto Joseph von Eltester (born October 25, 1822 in Koblenz ; † March 1, 1879 there ) was a German archivist and historian .

Life

Leopold Eltester was born on October 25, 1822 in Koblenz as the son of a director's councilor . First he was educated at the local grammar school (today Görres grammar school ) and in 1841 moved to the Humboldt University of Berlin to study law , then to the University of Heidelberg , where he graduated with the auscultation exam in October 1844 . In the following year he worked as an intern at the Koblenz Regional Court , after which he worked at the Justice Senate in Ehrenbreitstein . In April 1848, he was finally appointed acting judge at the Altenkirchen Justice Office . He held this position until December 1853 and was then regional court assessor again in his hometown. In 1857 he was also part-time assistant archivist, and since 1863, after being released from the judicial service, he was state archivist and director of the Koblenz State Archives .

In 1865 he was appointed archivist. He held the position of state archivist until his suicide on March 1, 1879 in Koblenz at the age of 56.

Von Eltester, who was also active in drawing , wrote thirty articles for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie , preferably about rulers of the Middle Ages.

He married Elisabeth Maria Fernandine von Hilgers on October 2, 1860 (* December 31, 1827, † November 10, 1881). The couple had several children including:

  • Job Carl Viktor (born September 16, 1866; † February 12, 1900) ∞ Karoline Maria Franziska Stockmeyer (1875–1910)
  • August Leopold Heinrich (February 10, 1861 - December 3, 1912) ∞ Karoline Mathilde Johanna Ida Helene Nina Kutzbach (1867–1935)
