Helmut Mathy

Helmut Mathy (born May 14, 1934 in Kinheim , Mosel ; † October 14, 2008 in Mainz ) was a German historian and ministerial official .

Life

Helmut Mathy, son of a winemaker , attended elementary school in his hometown from 1940 to 1948, and then went to the State Elector Baldwin Advanced School in Münstermaifeld until he graduated from high school in 1954 . From 1954 he studied history , German literature , education , philosophy and Latin in Bonn , Munich , Innsbruck and Vienna . It was in 1959 at the University of Innsbruck in the historian Hans Kramer with a thesis on Franz Georg von Metternich doctorate .

From 1958 to 1967 Helmut Mathy worked at the University of Mainz , where he was mainly influenced by the historian Leo Just . First he was an assistant at the history seminar (1959/60), then on a DFG project by Eugen Ewig (1961), from 1961 research assistant to Leo Just. In 1964 he became curator, later academic advisor at the Institute for Legal and Constitutional History Johannes Bärmann . His task was to research the history of the University of Mainz, for which he carried out extensive archive studies. From the winter semester 1974/75 he was given a teaching position in university history, and in 1977 he was appointed honorary professor for his services to university history .

December 1, 1967 he became an officer in the Rhineland-Palatinate State Chancellery , first as Councilor and then as a senior civil servant, from 1970 as a government director and from 1973 as a Councilor . In the State Chancellery he worked as a consultant for public relations, regional history and regional studies. In 1988 he retired.

Helmut Mathy was a member of the CDU parliamentary group in the Mainz city council from 1994 to 2004 and was, among other things, its cultural policy spokesman. Mathy lived in Mainz-Bretzenheim .

Act

Helmut Mathy was regarded as a profound expert on the history of the city , the university and the Mainz region. His main research interests were the history of the city in the late phase of the Old Empire, the French Revolution and the Napoleonic period, the 18th and early 19th centuries, as well as the old and new Mainz University. So he organized the ceremony for the 200th anniversary of the Mainzer Main Cemetery in 2003 and gave a lecture on the history of the Mainz City Library . In this context he also gave a lecture on Wilhelm Heinse . Mathy also dealt with earlier Mainz historians such as Stephan Alexander Würdtwein .

In his adopted home Mainz, Mathy was involved in numerous Mainz clubs and associations. Mathy was chairman of the Mainz Antiquities Association from 1970 to 2007 , and in 2007 he became its honorary chairman.

Awards and honors

Mathy has received many awards for his services. In 1988 he was awarded the title of Honorary Senator of the University of Mainz . In 2000 he was awarded the Roman Imperial Medallion by the City of Mainz for his commitment . In 2006 he received the "Ludwig Lindenschmit Plaque" from the Mainz Antiquities Association.
