Otto Hermann Konrad Böcher (born March 12, 1935 in Worms ; † February 27, 2020 in Mainz ) was a German Protestant theologian and professor of the New Testament at the University of Mainz .

Otto Hermann Konrad Böcher was born in 1935 as the son of a deacon in Worms. After graduating from high school in 1954 at the Rudi-Stephan-Gymnasium in Worms , he studied Protestant theology , art history and philosophy at the universities of Mainz and Heidelberg . During his studies he became a member of the Christian student associations Mainzer Wingolf (1954) and Heidelberg Wingolf (1956). In 1958 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD, 1963 in the New Testament as Dr. theol. From 1962 to 1964 worked as a pastor in Selzen in Rheinhessen . From 1963 to 1968 he was a research assistant at the University of Mainz. In 1968 he qualified as a professor for the subject of the New Testament in Mainz, where he became a private lecturer, and in 1971 an extraordinary professor. He taught religious education in Saarbrücken from 1975 to 1978 and was professor for the New Testament in Mainz from 1978 until his retirement in 2003. Shortly before his 85th birthday, Otto Böcher died in Mainz in 2020. Böcher was married and has three sons and a daughter.

Böcher was a member of the Hessian Historical Commission , the Palatinate Society for the Advancement of Science, the Herold zu Berlin and the Humboldt Society for Science, Art and Education .

Scientific achievement

Otto Böcher published numerous articles on the New Testament Revelation of John , on demonism , on baptism and - beyond the New Testament - on ancient and medieval Judaism and on the history of art in the Middle and Upper Rhine area. He appeared regularly as an author of student history texts. He is also known as the author of the Small Lexicon of Student Customs , which has so far appeared in three editions.

Honors and dedications

In recognition of his services to genealogy and heraldry , Otto Böcher was appointed a corresponding member of the Herold, Association for Heraldry, Genealogy and Allied Sciences in Berlin in 1985.

On June 27, 2014 he was awarded the Ring of Honor by the City of Worms .

On December 10, 2014, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate .

In the Order of St. John he was knight of honor in 1976, legal knight in 1987 and honorary commander in 2002.
