geography
The wine village is in Rheinhessen on the Selz . The center of the state capital Mainz is about 12 kilometers north of Selzen, about 6 kilometers east of the municipality the Rhine flows . Neighboring communities are Mommenheim , Nierstein , Dexheim , Köngernheim , Hahnheim and Zornheim . The Paulinenhof residential area also belongs to Selzen .
history
The first documentary mention of Selzen is in 782 as "Salts" in the Lorsch Codex . Grave finds from the Younger Stone Age - 2000 BC -, from Roman times - 100 AD - and the cemetery of Selzen from the Franconian period of the 6th / 7th centuries. Century document a place steeped in history.
From the early Middle Ages to the 16th century, Selzen was part of the Worms cathedral chapter . The cathedral courtyard was the tenth courtyard of the cathedral monastery. In the 15th century the Electoral Palatinate acquired the "Kapellhube" (chapel courtyard) and ousted the Worms cathedral monastery.
This process is reflected in the court seal (in today's coat of arms) from that time: "The Palatinate lion holds the stolen Worms key in his right paw".
The Lords of Bolanden owned a castle here in the 12th century. From 1294 the Worms cathedral monastery held the bailiwick. After it had to cede one half to the Electoral Palatinate in 1453, the stronger partner took over the entire local rule step by step. Franconian grave finds show that Selzen has grown together from three settlement centers. the church in the east, the Worms Zehnthof in the northwest and the mill in the south, near which a stone footbridge (1617) leads the footpath to Undenheim over the Selz. As early as 1413, the Electoral Palatinate owned three courtyards, including the Kapellenhof, which is still in existence today, where exhibitions and theater performances often take place during the summer months. In 1572 the Romanesque church was demolished except for the tower that still stands today. The new Gothic building was replaced in 1740/1741 by a baroque hall building that houses a valuable Stumm organ from 1791. This organ was financed by a foundation of the local citizen Jacob Waadt, accorded on March 2nd, 1787 and inaugurated on March 6th, 1791. Together with the Stumm organ from Framersheim, the Selzer organ is the largest single-manual instrument from the Sulzbach workshop. After a restoration by Gerhard Schmid in 1973/1974, the instrument was technically revised in an exemplary manner by the Klais workshop in 2015. The Selzer Stumm organ has since received increasing attention and appreciation.
To the east of the thoroughfare, in the side streets, there are several half-timbered buildings. At the end of Ostergasse you can see the remains of piers of the former fortification, the Oppenheimer Pforte.
In 1792 the spiritual manorial rule of the Worms cathedral monastery ended. This meant that the tithe had to be paid to Worms. Out of joy, the elm was felled on the southeast corner of Selzen and a bonfire was held.
In 1797 Selzen fell to France. In 1816 it was reclassified and from then on belonged to the newly formed province of Rheinhessen , which was assigned to the Grand Duchy of Hesse .
Selzen has belonged to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946. In the course of an administrative reform in 1972, Selzen was assigned to the Nierstein-Oppenheim association.
According to legend, in the Middle Ages the inhabitants were obliged to silence the frogs in the Selz or in the pond by hitting the water with poles. The manor wanted to sleep undisturbed by croaking. That is why the residents are nicknamed the Selzer frogs.

coat of arms
Blazon : "In black a growing, red-armored and crowned golden lion, holding a silver key in his right paw." | |
Justification for the coat of arms: So the COURT SIGEL ZV SELSEN 1537 and a second seal with illegible inscription. The place belonged to the cathedral monastery of Worms and came half to the Electoral Palatinate in 1453, which is excellently represented by the half Palatinate lion with the Worms key. Brilmayer depicts a golden orb (without a cross) in red as a coat of arms; from which source is unknown. |
