Evangelical Mauritius Church

Engelstadt is a municipality in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Gau-Algesheim community .

geography

Engelstadt is about 15 kilometers southwest of Mainz and is a place characterized by agriculture and viticulture .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 941 as Engilestat .

The Mainz Bishop Albert Stohr found refuge from the National Socialists in Engelstadt in the spring of 1945 and went into hiding until the American army advanced. Three days after the Americans took the city of Mainz, Stohr returned to his episcopal city on March 24, 1945 and began rebuilding the church and the country.

Buildings

The Protestant parish church was first mentioned in 1228 and is consecrated to St. Mauritius . The Carolingian lintel in the tower is particularly valuable . The church houses an organ built by Hermann Dreymann in 1855 .

Regular events

The Engelstädter Kerb always takes place on the second weekend in September and the village festival on the third weekend in June.

In addition, there has been the Rock Hexennacht in Engelstadt since 2003. This is a live open air with rock music, which is always organized on April 30th by the Engelstadt cycling club and the Engelstadt youth club.
