  • The Bundesautobahn 60 (abbreviation: BAB 60 ) - short form: Autobahn 60 (abbreviation: A 60 ) - is a motorway that runs in two sections from the Belgian border at Sankt Vith to Wittlich and from Bingen via Mainz to Rüsselsheim am Main . The gap between Wittlich and Bingen to by a four-lane, highway-like developed national road to be closed. The entire route is part of the European route 42 and between Prüm and Bitburg the European route 29 .

    Route

    Winterspelt – Wittlich (Eifel route)

The A 60 begins at the former Steinebrück border crossing with four lanes as a continuation of the Belgian A 27 from Liège . The national border runs on the 411 meter long Ourtalbrücke , which crosses the border river of the same name between Belgium and Germany . This section of the route to Wittlich is also called the Eifel motorway . On the German side there is a parking lot behind the viaduct, which was originally created as a customs facility. A similar facility exists on the Belgian side on the other side of the Our. Directly behind the first Winterspelt junction (2), only the northern lane is completed, over which the traffic is guided in a single lane. The complete expansion of the section is listed in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan as “further demand”. However, an expansion is not foreseeable due to the very low traffic volume in the entire section of the route. Some smaller bridges and all overpass structures have already been built for four lanes, but the three large bridges have only been completed for two lanes. In some places, however, a third lane was marked to enable overtaking. Furthermore, the section is provided with yellow kilometers for federal roads.

For a long time, the following section between Prüm (4) and Bitburg (6) was also only developed with two lanes. However, numerous serious accidents resulted in the expansion being given priority. Due to the many viaducts, however, the expansion was not completed until the Nimstalbrücke was completed in 2000. Between the Bitburg (6) and bath (7) junctions , the route runs over the Kylltal Bridge near the municipality of Wilsecker , which is one of the largest reinforced concrete arch bridges in Germany with a span of 223 m .

    Closing the gap (Hunsrück route)

The first section of the A 60 ends at the Wittlich motorway junction , where the A 1 ( Fehmarn - Hamburg - Bremen - Cologne - Saarbrücken ) crosses . The gap to Bingen will be built as a new B 50 ( Hochmosel crossing ). Between the Wittlich junction and Platten , the four-lane route has been under traffic since December 15, 2014, the subsequent section to Longkamp with the 158 m high Hochmosel bridge , a tunnel and three other large bridges should originally be completed in 2018; traffic was opened on November 21, 2019 The federal road is then to be expanded to four lanes as far as Hahn Airport and there, at the section in Rheinböllen , which was completed in 2011, it will flow into the A 61 , via which the second section of the A 60 can be reached. With the completion of the motorway-like stretch, it will be the shortest connection between the Rhine-Main area and Luxembourg and Wallonia . Closing the gap should, however, also have a positive impact on the economy and tourism in the entire Eifel-Mosel region, as it is then well connected in all directions.

    Bingen – Rüsselsheim (Rhine-Main route)

The second section of the A 60 begins at the Nahetal motorway triangle on the A 61 between Bingen am Rhein and Gensingen . This is built like a motorway junction and thus still bears witness to the planned closure of the gap as a continuous motorway to Wittlich. The route leads in four lanes immediately south of the Rhine past Ingelheim and Heidesheim am Rhein to the Mainz motorway triangle , where the A 643 branches off to Wiesbaden . From the junction Ingelheim-West, the hard shoulder of the southern, from the junction Heidesheim also the hard lane of the northern lane is re-marked as a regular third lane up to the Mainz triangle, and isolated emergency bays have been set up instead . The A 60 then forms the southern part of the Mainzer Ring and runs south around Mainz . As far as the Mainz-Süd motorway junction , it has only four lanes without hard shoulder and with emergency bays. The A 63 in the direction of Kaiserslautern begins at the Mainz-Süd junction . From the Mainz-Süd junction to the Ginsheim-Gustavsburg junction, the motorway was expanded to six lanes from the end of the 1990s, with the shoulder on the Rhine bridge being converted. For reasons of noise protection, the motorway was lowered and a noise protection tunnel was built near Mainz-Hechtsheim . Since the official release on August 10, 2012, three lanes have been available in each direction and the Mainz-Hechtsheim-Ost exit is now in the tunnel. In the Hechtsheim area there are no longer any motorway bridges, rather the motorway runs under the street and the local tram. A full expansion of six lanes with hard shoulder between Ingelheim-West and Mainz-Süd junction is included in the Urgent Needs - Congestion Removal of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 . For the section between the Mainz-Süd triangle and Mainz-Süd intersection, including the renovation of the Mainz-Süd intersection, the design planning was in progress at the end of 2016. A six-lane expansion between the Nahetal and Ingelheim-West triangles is also included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan , but only in the Additional Needs category with planning rights .

After crossing the Rhine on the Weisenauer Bridge , you are in Hesse . Immediately afterwards, the A 671 to Wiesbaden and Mainz-Kastel is connected at the Mainspitz triangle , which forms the eastern part of the Mainzer Ring. Past Bischofsheim and south of Rüsselsheim am Main , the A 60 joins the A 67 ( Frankfurt - Darmstadt - Mannheim ) at the Rüsselsheimer Dreieck . The section east of the Mainspitz triangle is currently only developed with four lanes with hard shoulder, but is also to be developed with six lanes ( urgent need - elimination of bottlenecks in the federal traffic route plan ).

    history

Originally the A 60 was supposed to connect the Rhine-Main area with Belgium. The route between Mainz and Bingen was built in sections in the 1950s and 1960s as a new section of federal highway 9 and was upgraded to a motorway in the 1970s. As early as 1976 there were plans to build the missing Hunsrück stretch. The construction of the missing section failed at the time due to the resistance of the citizens' initiative of several villages west of the Nahe valley motorway triangle. The construction of this motorway section is no longer planned. Today traffic from the Nahetal motorway triangle is routed via the A 61 and from the Rheinböllen junction via the B 50 . This is already four-lane and motorway-like between AS Rheinböllen and Hahn Airport. A further expansion of this type to the southern end of the Hochmosel crossing at Longkamp is to take place.
