The area around Spangdahlem was already settled in Roman times. In the Weilbach valley between Dahlem and the Gelsdorf farm near Gransdorf , remains of buildings from Roman times were found in 1844.

The first documentary mention of the district of Dahlem can be found in a list of properties of the Prüm Abbey from the year 867. The place is called "de uilla dalon", later the place is called "Dahleim" (1220). The district of Spang is first mentioned in 1254 as "Spangen". The Brandenmühle is first mentioned in 1181.

Up to 1794 Spang and Dahlem belonged to the Electorate of Trier Kyllburg . Both localities have formed a municipality for centuries and were always called Spang-Dahlem together, also because there were or are several places with the name Dahlem in the near and far. The Eiflia Illustrata from 1854 found it worth mentioning that two general and cattle markets are held annually in Spang-Dahlem, one on the second Thursday after Corpus Christi and the other on the first Thursday after the Assumption of Mary .

During the French administration, Mairie Spang was assigned to the canton of Kyllburg in the arrondissement of Prüm in the Saar department .

After the Prussians took over the Rhineland (1815), a mayor's office was set up in Spang in 1816 , which belonged to the Wittlich district in the Trier administrative district . The municipalities of Binsfeld , Dahlem and Spang belonged to the mayor's office in Spang. The seat was later moved to Binsfeld.

At the beginning of the 19th century Spang had 566 inhabitants who lived in 95 houses, Dahlem 309 inhabitants in 58 houses. The Brandmühle (Brandenmühle) and the Schleiermühle (Scheuermühle), each with eleven residents, also belonged to Dahlem.
