history

The area around Herforst was already settled in pre-Roman times. This is proven by several barrows that have been archaeologically explored since the late 19th century.

In Roman times, the area around Herforst and Speicher benefited from the large clay deposits and became an important pottery center. Proof of this is the large number of pottery kilns in which, up to the 5th century, mainly utility ceramics for nearby Trier were produced.

Another indication of a Roman use of the area around Herforst is the late antique long wall , which ran through the present-day location and is one of the largest antique buildings in the Trier region .

The archaeological finds from the area around Herforst can be viewed in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier , the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn and the Speicher Heimatmuseum.

Herforst belonged to the rule of Seinsfeld in the Duchy of Luxembourg until 1795 .

From 1770 to 1800 Herforst was mainly forest area. In addition, there were several extensive fish ponds in the vicinity of the place, which were later converted into meadows. Fishery justice was exercised by the Luxembourg rule Seinsfeld and the monasteries of Himmerod .

Around 1870 the Herforsters earned their money with ore digging. Stone carving was a particularly profitable source of money. The hewn stone from Herforst was known and loved and was often used for beautiful buildings far down the Moselle.

coat of arms

Herforst coat of arms
Blazon : "Divided by gold over green, above a continuous, notched red cross, below a golden oak branch with acorn."
Founding of the coat of arms: Herforst belonged to the Seinsfeld rule in the Duchy of Luxembourg until 1795. For a long time the rule was in the possession of the von Lontzen called Roben; they led a continuous, notched, red cross in gold. The place name Herforst goes back to the Middle High German "vorst", a loan word from the Middle Latin foresta, French forêt = forest. As a reference to the place name Her "forst", the lower part of the shield shows a golden oak branch in green.

Culture and sights

Parish Church of St. Eligius

The protocol of the visitation of 1570 shows a chapel for Herforst that was built in Gothic times. This was torn down in 1729 to build a new building on the same site. But even this church building soon became too small and was replaced by today's church in 1832, dedicated to St. Eligius is consecrated. The elongated hall with a round choir looks very simple and is approx. 25 m × 9 m in size. Six windows in each of the long sides let light into the interior. This is determined by the high altar and the 14 carved wooden figures of the needy helpers . In 1950 the parish church received three new bells after the old ones had to be delivered during the two world wars.

The Marienglocke bears the inscription:

"Maria spread out her coat,
make an umbrella and shield out of it for us."

The Joseph Bell bears the inscription:

"St. Joseph and you fourteen saints great by God
, help us in need and death. "

The Eligius bell bears the inscription:

“We greet you happily on the throne of God,
Eligius, holy patron saint.
O strengthen our faith
that nothing can rob us of
love and fidelity to Christ the Lord. "

The organ of the Ernst Seifert company was inaugurated in 1959.

Lourdes grotto

A Lourdes grotto was built next to the church in 1935 . It imitates the famous grotto in the pilgrimage site of Lourdes , although there is no figure of Bernadette in Herforst . After extensive renovation work, the grotto has been shining in new splendor since 2000.

Roman long wall

The long wall is the largest Roman building in the Trier region and ran through Herforst. It was a 72 km long wall that enclosed an area of 220 km². The only two inscriptions on this structure were found in Herforst. There are two building inscriptions that prove that military units built the wall. With the help of the inscriptions and the evaluation of the wall technology, the construction of the wall could be dated to the 2nd half of the 4th century. On the initiative of the Heimat- und Kulturverein, a section of the long wall at the entrance to the village was reconstructed and casts of the two inscription stones were added.
