About this picture

Hosten in der Eifel is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the collective municipality of Speicher .

geography

The municipality is located in the Kylltal of the natural and cultural landscape of the southern Eifel , a small tributary valley of the Moselle , near the district town of Bitburg .

The Wollersheck residential area is part of the host.

history

The place was first mentioned as "Houestedem" together with Auw an der Kyll in a property register of the Abbey of St. Maximin in Trier from the early 13th century. The Maximiner Hofgut formed the center of the village and possibly also the starting point for settlement. In 1798 it was left to the previous leaseholder, Christoph Meyer, who soon sold it on.

The few farmsteads in Hostens, in 1473 there were three households, in 1636 only two households, increased to 19 farms in the 19th and 20th centuries (around 1840) and 48 (around 1980). In 1865 Hosten received its first church and in 1898 its own school. However, the church was destroyed in the war, so in 1950 it was decided to build a new church on the same site. This was completed and inaugurated by the Trier auxiliary bishop and later diocesan bishop Bernhard Stein in October 1953. It is consecrated to St. Joseph .

coat of arms

Hosten Coat of Arms
Blazon : "Divided by silver over blue, on top of a green stem three blue flax blossoms with golden clusters, below a golden pointed iron "
Foundation of the coat of arms: In the oral tradition, the knowledge of the "Maximiner Hof", a court of the important St. Maximin Abbey in Trier, has been preserved to this day. The flax blossoms are indicative of the farm and the agricultural structure of the place. The “pointed iron”, actually a crown , is reminiscent of the area's sandstone industry, which was important up until the 1980s. Many sandstone millstones or grindstones in front of various properties are a reminder of this .
