There he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1926 and a doctorate in theology in 1930 . Bernhard Stein was ordained a priest on October 27, 1929 in the church of the Germanicum .

For the next two years he worked in the pastoral care as a chaplain at St. Martin in Trier. From May 1, 1938, Bernhard Stein received a teaching position for biblical languages and introduction to the Bible at the Trier seminary, and from 1940 until 1944 he also held the chair . In the meantime he had acquired a second theological doctorate in Münster in 1939 on the concept of “God's glory” and its meaning for the Old Testament knowledge of God.

Pope Pius XII appointed him on September 2, 1944 titular bishop of Dagnum and auxiliary bishop in Trier. The episcopal ordination Bernhard Stein received on November 5, 1944 - during an air attack by the Allies - by the Bishop of Trier, Archbishop Franz Rudolf Bornewasser , co-consecrators were the bishop of Speyer , Joseph Wendel , as well as the auxiliary bishop of Trier Heinrich Metz Roth . Bishop Stein's motto was: “Fides Caritate actuosa” ( Faith that works through love, Gal 5,6  EU ).

On April 13, 1967, Pope Paul VI appointed Bernhard Stein as probably the hundredth Bishop of Trier (inauguration: June 5, 1967). After more than thirteen years of service, Bernhard Stein resigned from his position as Bishop of Trier on September 5, 1980 for reasons of age, with Pope John Paul II in place.

On the occasion of the Heilig-Rock-Pilgrimage 2012, the street area northeast of Trier Cathedral was redesigned and officially named Bischof-Stein-Platz. At the beginning of 2020, calls were made to revoke this designation, as Stein covered up abuse of children and adolescents committed by priests in his diocese and continued to use the alleged perpetrators in the pastoral care of the community.
