Leo Schwarz (born October 9, 1931 in Braunweiler ; † November 26, 2018 in Trier ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman . From 1982 to 2006 he was auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Trier . His life and work are closely linked to Bolivia , the partner country of the Diocese of Trier, where he was held in high regard and was mostly simply called Padrecito (little priest) in the parishes he looked after .

Life

After graduating from high school, Leo Schwarz studied pedagogy at the Pedagogical Academy in Trier from 1952 to 1954 and then worked as a teacher in Cochem / Mosel from 1954 to 1955 . From 1955 to 1956 he studied at Western Michigan College in Kalamazoo / USA. Then, from 1956 to 1961, he studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Trier and Münster .

On July 31, 1960, Leo Schwarz was ordained priest for the diocese of Trier. From 1962 to 1970 he worked as a pastor in the Archdiocese of Sucre in Bolivia . After his return to Germany he worked for a few years in the parish pastoral care in Pellingen and as a spiritual adviser to the Paulinus printing house. In 1974 he moved to the Misereor Episcopal Relief Organization , where he was General Manager from 1976 to 1982.

On January 4, 1982 Pope John Paul II appointed Leo Schwarz as titular bishop of Abbir Germaniciana and auxiliary bishop in Trier. The bishop of Trier, Hermann Josef Spital , donated him his episcopal ordination on March 28 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Auxiliary Bishop Carl Schmidt and Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga , who later became Cardinal and Archbishop of Tegucigalpa .

As auxiliary bishop, Schwarz helped to set up the Renovabis aid organization (solidarity campaign between German Catholics and people in Central and Eastern Europe). For ten years he was also chairman of the German Justitia et Pax Commission . Since 2005 he has been President of the European Justitia et Pax Commissions and continued to perform this task even after he left the office of Auxiliary Bishop.

In the spring of 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation of 74-year-old Leo Schwarz and appointed Stephan Ackermann as his successor as auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Trier. As a retirement chaplain, Schwarz went back to Bolivia, where he worked in pastoral care in Cuevo, among other places . In 2017 he returned to Trier for health reasons, where he died on November 26, 2018.

Coat of arms and motto

The semicircular shield, divided above and half-split below, shows a lying red cross on a white / silver background, the diocese coat of arms of Trier. Below, in front on a blue background, a silver loaf of bread and a silver fish, a symbol for Jesus Christ and the Eucharist , behind a golden cob on a black background. The corn on the cob refers to his activity in Bolivia and the black background is supposed to express his family name.

Behind the shield is the bishop's cross, above the green galero with the six green tassels (fiocchi) hanging down, and the banner below.

His motto was: Conversio Participatio Communio in Christo (“Repentance, participation, fellowship in Christ”).
