Óscar Andrés Cardinal Rodríguez Maradiaga SDB (born December 29, 1942 in Tegucigalpa , Honduras ) is Archbishop of Tegucigalpa , Honduras. From 2007 to 2015 he was President of Caritas Internationalis .

Life

After finishing school, Óscar Rodríguez Maradiaga joined the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco on May 3, 1961 and then studied Catholic theology , piano and composition , physics , mathematics , chemistry , philosophy and psychology in Tegucigalpa, Rome and Innsbruck .

He was at the Institute "Don Rua" in El Salvador as a doctor of philosophy at the Pontifical Salesian University for doctor of theology and at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome a doctorate in moral theology doctorate . He then obtained a diploma in clinical psychology and psychotherapy at the Clinic for Psychiatry at the University of Innsbruck . As a psychotherapist, he is a member of the European Society for Behavioral Therapy .

On July 28, 1970, he received the sacrament of ordination through Archbishop Girolamo Prigione in Guatemala City and was called to be assistant bishop in the same year. From 1975 he was rector of the Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala for three years . He then worked as a teacher of chemistry, physics and music at various schools of his order in El Salvador , Honduras and Guatemala. At the same time he taught as a professor at the Theological Institute of the Salesians in Guatemala the subjects of ecclesiology and moral theology and headed the Philosophical Institute of his order as rector.

John Paul II accepted him on February 21, 2001 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria della Speranza in the college of cardinals . He is the first cardinal from Honduras. At the 2005 conclave he was considered a papabile himself .

He is currently a member of the Congregation for the Clergy , the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace , the Pontifical Council for Social Communications and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America .

At the 19th General Assembly of Caritas Internationalis in May 2011, he was re-elected international Caritas President for the next four years. In 2007 he succeeded Denis Viénot . In 2011 he was re-elected to office.

Cardinal Rodríguez Maradiaga is a member of the board of trustees of Don Bosco Mondo eV , an international non-governmental organization based in Bonn. The organization supports disadvantaged children and young people around the world through holistic school and vocational training to lead an independent life. Cardinal Rodríguez Maradiaga was a speaker at the Don Bosco Forum in Bonn in 2011. On January 18, 2014, he was again a speaker at the Don Bosco Forum, where he and the former Federal President D. He became known worldwide as the patron of the debt relief campaign on the occasion of the year 2000. During the coup d'état in Honduras in summer 2009, a statement by Cardinal Rodríguez Maradiaga was circulated across the country's media on July 4th. He warned that Manuel Zelaya's return could lead to a bloodbath, but at the same time urged the new government to promote national reconciliation and put aside revenge, persecution, violence and corruption. He also urged the Organization of American States (OAS) to investigate all illegal activities that occurred during Zelaya's rule.
