Girolamo Prigione

Girolamo Prigione (born October 12, 1921 in Castellazzo Bormida , Piedmont ; † May 27, 2016 in Alessandria ) was an Italian Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church and diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Girolamo Prigione studied theology and philosophy. He was ordained a priest on May 18, 1944 . He then received his doctorate in canon law ( Dr. iur. Can. ) And philosophy ( Dr. phil. ) At the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome .

He then graduated from the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in Rome and entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He was initially Nunciature Secretary in Italy (1951–1957), Great Britain (1957–1960) and in the USA (1960–1963). In 1963 he worked in the Nunciature in Austria in Vienna and at the same time represented the Curia at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) based in Vienna and a delegate of the Holy See in various international bodies.

On August 27, 1968 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. Appointed Titular Archbishop of Lauriacum and Apostolic Nuncio in El Salvador and Guatemala . The episcopal ordination received his Amleto Giovanni Cicognani Cardinal , President of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See , on 24 November 1968 in Castellazzo Bormida; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of the Curia and later Cardinal Giovanni Benelli and the Bishop of Alessandria , Giuseppe Almici . In 1973 he was Apostolic Delegate in Ghana and Nigeria , from 1975 to 1976 first Apostolic Nuncio for Gambia and in 1976 Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Nigeria. In 1978 Prigione was initially a delegate in Mexico, and from 1992 a nuncio. In Mexico he enjoyed a high reputation; Among other things, he was committed to constitutional reforms, in particular Article 130 (principle of religious freedom).

His age-related resignation was granted on April 2, 1997 by Pope John Paul II .

Archbishop Girolamo Prigione was an honorary member of the Catholic student association KAV Danubia Vienna-Korneuburg in the ÖCV.
