Emanuele Gerada
Emanuele Gerada (born May 18, 1920 in Żejtun , Malta ; † January 21, 2011 in Msida , Malta) was a diplomat of the Holy See .
Life
After attending the Lyceum, Emanuele Gerada studied theology and philosophy at the seminary in Malta and at the University of Malta . On August 1, 1943, he received by the Auxiliary Bishop of Malta, Emanuel Galea , the ordination . In 1944 he completed a postgraduate course at the University of Nottingham . In 1952 he received his doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University . He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and received training at the Pontificia Accademia Ecclesiastica in Rome. In 1952 he became an attaché at the Apostolic Internunciature in Egypt . In 1953 Emanuele Gerada became the private chamberlain of Pope Pius XII. In 1956 he moved to India as secretary of the Apostolic Church , shortly afterwards as secretary and chargé d'affaires of the nunciature in Dublin due to the death of the nuncio. From 1960 to 1964 he was examiner of the nunciature and chargé d'affaires in Tokyo , then a member of the apostolic delegation in Mexico . In 1965 Gerada became an advisor to the nunciature and domestic prelate of Pope Paul VI. ; In 1966 he was appointed chargé d'affaires of the nunciature in Kigali , Rwanda.
Pope Paul VI appointed him on February 15, 1967 titular bishop of Nomentum and auxiliary bishop in Malta . The Archbishop of Malta, Michael Gonzi , donated him episcopal ordination on June 18, 1967 ; Co-consecrators were Emanuel Galea, Auxiliary Bishop in Malta, and Patrick Joseph Dunne , Auxiliary Bishop in Dublin . In support of Gonzis, Gerada was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Malta on April 6, 1968 .
On November 8, 1973 he was raised to titular archbishop pro hac vice of Nomentum and appointed apostolic nuncio in El Salvador and Guatemala . On October 15, 1980 he was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Pakistan . Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland on February 4, 1989 . On October 17, 1995, John Paul II accepted his retirement, after which Gerada took his retirement home in Malta. He died in the Mater Dei Hospital in Msida and was buried in the family grave in Żejtun.
Emanuele Gerada was Grand Prior of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in Malta.
Act
Archbishop Gerada was instrumental in mediating the dispute between the Catholic Church and the Malta Labor Party in the 1960s. His mediation proposal on Good Friday of 1969 ended the conflict between then Prime Minister Dom Mintoff and Archbishop Gonzi.
As Nuncio in El Salvador, Emanuele Gerada was the focus of Óscar Romero's first confrontation with the official church leadership.
