The University of Malta ( Maltese L-Università ta 'Malta ) is the only university in Malta .

history

Already by a papal bull from Pius IV on August 29, 1561, later confirmed by another bull from Pope Gregory XIII. on May 9, 1578, the Jesuit Collegia Externorum were authorized to confer the degrees of Magister Philosophiae and Doctor Divinitatis . On November 12, 1592, the Jesuit College, Collegium Melitense, was founded by the Bishop of Malta, Tomás Gargal (Gargallo) OSIo.Hieros, at the suggestion of Pope Clement VIII and the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Hugues Loubenx de Verdale . , founded in Valletta . First the subjects grammar and mathematics, later theology and philosophy were taught.

The Collegium Melitense was originally located in Valletta surrounded by the Triq il-Merkanti (Merchants Street), the Triq San Kristofru (St. Christopher Street), the Triq San Pawl (St. Paul Street) and the Triq l-Arcisqof (Archbishop Street) . In 1650 an extensive public library was established. In 1676, Grand Master Nicolas Cotoner established a school for surgery and anatomy as well as a religious hospital.

After the Jesuits were expelled from Malta in 1768 by the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Manuel Pinto de Fonseca , he founded the University of General Studies with his personal fortune . The decree on the foundation was signed on November 22nd, 1769 and with the papal letter "Sedula Romani Pontifici" of October 20th, 1769 by Pope Clement XIII. approved. On May 25, 1771, today's medical faculty was established.

After a brief interlude under Napoleon's reign from June 11, 1798 to October 28, 1800, the university was re-established by the British Governor of Malta, Alexander Ball . From 1937 to 1974 the university had royal recognition as the Royal University of Malta . The University of Malta is the oldest Commonwealth University outside the UK; however, as shown above, it does not go back to the UK education system.

Its current status as the University of Malta was established in 1988. Most of the lectures are held in English ; in addition, Maltese is common as a lingua franca. Since 2009, the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) has had a lecturer at the university. In 2009 a master’s degree, and in 2012 a diploma degree, was set up in German.
