The Compostela Group of Universities (CGU) is a European network of university associations that was founded in 1993. Seventy European universities now belong to this group. The aim of this association is to promote collaboration between researchers from the individual universities.

history

In 1993 the University of Santiago de Compostela established contacts with other universities that are geographically located on the Camino de Santiago. The main goal was to create a university network that would encourage collaboration with other universities and help protect the cultural and historical heritage that has established itself around the pilgrimage.

On September 2-4, 1993, the representatives of 57 European universities met in Santiago to jointly define the guidelines and goals of the association. There were three main points:

  • Strengthening communication between university members
  • Organization of events on important European issues
  • Promote mobility to spread the cultures and languages of Europe.

A commission made up of representatives from the universities in Valladolid, Liège, Nantes, Göttingen, Minho, Jaume I and Santiago de Compostela established the final principles of the Compostela University Group. At the constitutional meeting from 2-3. September 1994 in the University of Santiago de Compostela the principles were adopted.

International award: Compostela-Xunta de Galicia prize

In 1996, the Compostela University Group and the Ministry of Culture, Social Communication and Tourism of the Galician Regional Government (Xunta de Galicia) signed the agreement for the international award “Compostela-Xunta de Galicia prize”. It is an annual award given to a person or institution who has distinguished themselves through their commitment to promoting the common European ideal and preserving the cultural heritage. The jury is composed of the President of the Galician Regional Government (Chair) as well as the Minister of Culture, Education Minister and University Director of the Galician Regional Government. The Compostela University Group is represented by the President and three rectors of the member universities. The rectors are appointed annually by the General Council. The candidates for the award are nominated either by the Galician government or by the CGU universities.
