The University of Oviedo ( Spanish Universidad de Oviedo ast. Universidá d'Uviéu ) is a state university that was founded at the end of the 16th century by the Catholic Archbishop Fernando Valdés Salas and began its activities in Oviedo in 1608 . Today, as the State University of Asturias, it has branches in Gijón and Mieres .
history
The university was inaugurated on September 21, 1608 and the three major faculties of canon law , (secular) law , and theology began teaching. This fulfilled the will of Fernando Valdés Salas in will . The Archbishop of Seville and Grand Inquisitor during the reigns of Charles I and Philip II had previously founded the San Gregorio College for grammar and Latin studies, as well as a school for orphan girls in Recoletas. Today the rectorate has its seat in the former college of Recoletas; the San Gregorio property, opposite the historic university building, is now owned by a bank.
In the first few years, the university's efforts were primarily aimed at improving and consolidating the organization of the subjects it offered, as the financial resources did not allow much more. During this time, the universities were based on the so-called Estatutos Viejos (German: "Old Statutes") and the standards of the University of Salamanca .
The most formative events of the following centuries were the reform of the Spanish universities in 1774 and the occupation of the historic building of the university by the French, which led to the cessation of teaching until they were expelled in 1812.
At the end of the 19th century, a group of liberal university teachers founded the so-called Extensión Universitaria , which aimed to institutionalize public universities. However, this Extensión Universitaria was nothing more than an attempt, which in reality just reached the public at its own university. The proletariat in particular continued to see the university as an institution whose purpose it was to pass on the ideology of the bourgeoisie . This led to the fact that the University of Oviedo was set on fire and destroyed on October 13, 1934, during the uprising of the socialists and communists against the republic. The large library and the no less important art gallery with evidence of Asturian culture also fell victim to the fire .
After the Spanish Civil War , the university was rebuilt, although some voices were in favor of relocating the university to Santander .
