The Carlos III University of Madrid ( Spanish : Universidad Carlos III de Madrid , UC3M for short ) is a state university in Spain. It was founded in 1989 and has a campus each in Getafe , Leganés , Colmenarejo and a campus near the Puerta de Toledo in the center of Madrid . Around 17,000 students study 40 different courses at the university. The UC3M is considered one of the most prestigious universities in Spain.
The university is named after King Charles III. named by Spain , who ruled in the sense of "enlightened despotism" (span. Despotismo Ilustrado) and as an absolutist monarch promoted education, among other things. The motto of the UC3M comes from Seneca and is “Homo homini sacra res” (German: “Man is holy to man” ).
In the field of teaching, the university has four centers:
- Getafe Campus: Faculty of Social Sciences, Law, Humanities, Documentation and Communication
- Leganés campus: Technical University
- Colmenarejo campus: different faculties
- Campus Puerta de Toledo: Masters courses
The university maintains numerous exchange programs with German universities.
The Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. programs in business administration and economics are among the most renowned in the country and have taken top positions in European rankings. At the beginning of 2010, the Carlos III University of Madrid was named "Campus de Excelencia Internacional" in a competition initiated by the Spanish Ministry of Education. UC3M is listed in the QS University Ranking Top 50 Under 50 2015 as one of the 50 best universities under the age of 50 worldwide. The student body consists of about 20% international students and a large number of the study programs are offered in English.
