Kapfenberger SV

The Franz-Fekete-Stadion (formerly Alpenstadion ) is a sports facility in Kapfenberg in the state of Styria , Austria . Although all facilities for athletics are available, it is primarily used for football and is the home of Kapfenberger SV .

history

The Franz Fekete Stadium was built between 1941 and 1951 under the then mayor Heinrich Scheibengraf . It was opened on September 10, 1950 under the name Alpenstadion . The Austrian champions at the time, FK Austria Wien, were invited to the opening, defeating the home team 8-1 in front of 10,000 spectators.

Between 1951 and 1967, the stadium hosted the Kapfenberger SV home games in the top division for a total of eleven seasons . From 1985 to 1987, the stadium was largely expanded and modernized under the Kapfenberg mayor Franz Fekete . In the years that followed, a sports hotel and a floodlight system were added. The only heated artificial turf facility in Austria has been in operation in Kapfenberg since 2003, right next to the stadium. The stadium currently offers space for 10,000 people, with around 2,000 seats in the main grandstand and 1,000 in the Murau grandstand, which was built in 2009-11. A further 7,000 standing places are located around the play area.

In 1994, 1995 and 1996 the Austrian Supercup Finals took place in this stadium . In the 1996/97 season, the Grazer AK played a large part of its Bundesliga home games as well as the three home games in the UEFA Cup in Kapfenberg, including the second leg of the second main round against Inter Milan in front of 11,000 spectators, the large audience was made possible by additional grandstands. On September 18, 2001, on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the former mayor Franz Fekete, the stadium was finally given its current name. Fekete died on February 19, 2009 at the age of 87 in Kapfenberg.

In 2008, in view of the promotion of the professional team to the Austrian Bundesliga , the Bundesliga board stipulated that the stadium had to be expanded to include a grandstand in order to be suitable for the Bundesliga. Since the Kapfenberger SV had this project until the 2009/10 season , i.e. a total of two years, they decided to start building the additional grandstand in summer 2009. Despite numerous hours of work, one was not finished before the start of the season. So it happened that the grandstand roof was still missing for the home game in the first round and was only completed shortly before the next home game in the second round. The fixed grandstand, which replaced the temporary facility, was finally completed in autumn 2011, and the stadium's capacity was subsequently reduced to 10,000 visitors.
