Manuel Pinto de Fonseca
Manuel Pinto de Fonseca (born May 24, 1681 in Lamego , Portugal , † January 23, 1773 in Valletta , Malta ) was the 68th Grand Master of the Order of Malta from January 18, 1741 until his death (1773) .
Life
As a Portuguese nobleman, he was a knight of the Castilian tongue of the Order of Malta until his election as Grand Master .
In 1749, his bodyguard Cassar refused to participate in a Muslim slave revolt led by Mustafa Pascha , later Grand Vizier of Sultan Osman III. , was planned. This led to the exposure and suppression of the revolt . This event was then celebrated every June 29th.
He left the hostel of the Castilians (Auberge de Castille et Leone), which had been started in 1574, complete. It is one of the most imposing buildings in Valletta.
He was friends with the impostor and alchemist Cagliostro .
He maintained the best connections in the European ruling houses and significantly expanded the army of the order. He was committed to the arts and education. In 1768 Pinto expelled the Jesuits from Malta, dissolved the Jesuit Collegium Melitense and in 1769 founded the "University for General Studies", today's University of Malta .
