Gallbladder hydrops is an enlargement of the gallbladder by obstruction of the bile outflow either directly in the gallbladder neck (infundibulum) or by occluding the bile duct system up to the duodenum . The causes are mostly gallstones , scarred constrictions in the case of gallbladder inflammation or a tumor . If there is additional bacterial infestation , pus can form in the gallbladder ( gallbladder empyema ). The jammed gall bladder can be clearly felt at the lower edge of the liver .

In acute cases, especially in the case of biliary obstruction in the main bile duct between the confluence of the ductus cysticus and the confluence with the duodenum , endoscopic relief of the liver (using ERC (P) ) may be an option . Temporary conservative treatment should also be considered. With only a few exceptions, the final treatment is removal of the gallbladder ( cholecystectomy ).
