The working group of the scientific medical societies e. V. ' (AWMF) is the German umbrella organization of 182 medical societies .

Since 1995 the AWMF has been coordinating the development of medical guidelines for diagnostics and therapy by the individual scientific medical societies. All professional associations together have around 280,000 members. The association was founded on November 10, 1962 in Frankfurt am Main . It is recognized as a non-profit organization (promotion of science).

tasks and goals

The association advises on fundamental and interdisciplinary matters and tasks, develops recommendations and resolutions and represents them to the institutions involved, especially in the political arena. In addition to the - in view of the increasing specialization, increasingly urgent - tasks of internal cooperation, it wants to bring the interests of medical science to the fore.

Some examples are:

Medical guidelines for diagnosis and therapy
Education, training and advanced training in medicine
Interdisciplinary cooperation between the subjects
Classification systems in medicine (e.g. ICD , OPS )
Supply of scientific literature (libraries, scientific journals), e.g. B. by publishing a journal German Medical Science as Open Access .

With its independent tasks , the association is an important pillar in the overall medical organization, alongside other working groups such as the German Medical Association , Medical Faculty Conference , Association of University Hospitals in Germany , the Association of Medical Professional Associations and the institutions for the promotion of science (e.g. DFG ). The association strives for fruitful cooperation with the other institutions as well as the responsible political bodies in the interest of beneficial cooperation and a performance and future-oriented further development of the medical sciences and their implementation in medical practice.

Together with the German Cancer Aid and the German Cancer Society , the working group publishes patient guidelines on stomach cancer , the various forms of breast cancer and prostate cancer in easily understandable brochures.

organization

The seat is in Frankfurt am Main . The legal form was initially an unregistered association; since 2007 the legal form of a registered association exists. The organs of the association are the delegates' conference (parliament) and the executive committee. This includes (as of May 2015):

The association has had a permanent office since 1990, in Düsseldorf until 2016 (head 1985-2017: Wolfgang Müller ) and since 2017 in Berlin . Dennis Makoschey has been the managing director and head of the office since 2017.

In 2009 the association set up its own “AWMF Institute for Medical Knowledge Management (AWMF-IMWi)”, which is located in Marburg (Lahn) in the Medical Department of the Philipps University . Ina B. Kopp is the head of the institute.
