The German Society for Angiology Society for Vascular Medicine e. V. (DGA) (from the Greek angios = the vessel , logos = the teaching ) is a medical society for the promotion of research and further education in the field of vascular medicine and represents over 1200 vascular specialists. The Angiology and Vascular Medicine is the latest sub-area of internal medicine . Vascular medicine deals with diseases of the arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels in research, teaching and treatment.

Scientific work

The DGA participates in all guideline projects relating to vascular medicine and promotes z. B. with the certification of vascular and dialysis access centers (shunt centers) a quality-assured treatment of patients. This is particularly important because with demographic change and the increasing aging of society, more and more patients will need vascular treatment in the future.

Interventional Angiology

Due to the growing importance of endovascular procedures for the treatment of vascular diseases, the commission “Interventional Angiology” started its work on January 1st, 2017. The organization and implementation of the courses for the additional qualification within the framework of the Interventional Therapy of Arterial Vascular Diseases (ITaG) curriculum and the DGA Intervention Congress will be one of the most important fields of action.

Membership in associations

The German Society for Angiology is a member of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies ( AWMF ), the German Society for Internal Medicine ( DGIM ), the German Network for Health Services Research (DNVF) and the European Society for Vascular Medicine (ESVM).

Promotion of young talent

Forum Young Angiologists

The aim of the Forum for Young Angiologists is to interest young doctors in vascular medicine and to inform them about career opportunities in angiology. It is intended to promote research as well as to network young vascular specialists and to provide further and advanced training in angiology. The forum works in close cooperation with the Research, Teaching and Promotion of Young Talent Commission of the German Society for Angiology. In 2013 the Forum launched the Vascular Summer School as a multi-day advanced training event.

Angiology Assistant-DGA

In addition to the medical profession, the company is also interested in the training of medical assistants. For this purpose, the “Further and Further Education” commission has specially developed a curriculum for the two-year part-time further education for angiology assistants (DGA). Since 2015, membership in the DGA has also been open to medical assistants.

Patient

It is a primary concern of the DGA to educate both the medical profession and the public about the risks and prevention of vascular diseases and to raise awareness of them. This is why the professional association implements information campaigns such as risk thrombosis or classified information PAD.

Through media work, the DGA communicates the latest from research, teaching and patient-relevant vascular medicine topics. The DGA patient guides provide an overview of the prophylaxis, diagnosis and therapy of vascular diseases such as peripheral arterial occlusive disease, thrombosis and pulmonary embolism or varicose vein disease. With the DGA homepage, patients can find angiologists in their area or search specifically for doctors who are available for a second opinion.

"Thrombosis Risk" campaign

Every year more people die in Germany from venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism than from traffic accidents, AIDS, prostate and breast cancer combined. Current estimates assume 40,000 to 100,000 deaths. And yet there is little awareness of this in the population and in the medical profession. To counteract this, the DGA has initiated a comprehensive awareness-raising campaign on the subject of venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and launched the Thrombosis Alliance. In addition to the DGA and the German Vascular League, the German Society for Phlebology and the Society for Thrombosis and Hemostasis Research are now working on the campaign.

Campaign for classified information PAVK

In February 2010, the German Society for Angiology symbolically opened a "Classified PAD" and thus started an information campaign about the disease. In the case of PAD ( peripheral arterial occlusive disease ) there is a pathological narrowing of the arteries in the pelvis or in the legs. It will focus also colloquially claudication called and ekes out in the public perception, the medical diagnosis and the information offered by the health system in the shadows. The aim of Germany's first independent information campaign on PAOD is to provide targeted information about the disease and its prevention options. The campaign is supported by a partner network, the "Initiative against PAVK". "It is important to the DGA to provide information about this unknown widespread disease. Because early and comprehensive treatment of risk factors for PAD protects against serious consequences such as heart attack, stroke or amputation, ” says Karl-Ludwig Schulte, then President of the DGA.
