Konrad Schauenburg

Konrad Schauenburg (born April 16, 1921 in Heidelberg , † March 14, 2011 in Kiel ) was a German classical archaeologist . Schauenburg is one of the most important vase researchers in classical archeology.

The son of a lawyer studied in 1939 for one semester at the Archaeological Institute at Heidelberg University . In 1940 he was called up for military service. He was wounded in the war and was taken prisoner by the Americans, from which he was released in September 1945. In the winter semester 1945/1946 he continued his studies in Heidelberg with Reinhard Herbig , Otto Regenbogen and Hans Schaefer . In 1951, Schauenburg received his doctorate from Herbig on the sun god Helios . With the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute , he traveled to the northern Mediterranean region. In 1953 he was initially assistant to Ernst Homan-Wedekind at the University of Frankfurt , then in 1954 to Ernst Langlotz in Bonn . On July 23, 1958, there was his habilitation on Perseus and the appointment as a private lecturer. A three-year research grant from the German Research Foundation followed . In 1960 he received his habilitation at the University of Hamburg , where he was appointed adjunct professor in 1964. From 1969 until his retirement in 1989, Schauenburg was a full professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Kiel , which was associated with the directorate of the University of Kiel's Collection of Antiquities in the Kunsthalle Kiel .

In Kiel, the expansion of the antiquities collection gave him great public recognition. He succeeded in developing the area of ​​Lower Italian Greek vase painting into one of the leading collections in Germany. Through his contacts with important art dealers, he was able to increase the collection by 150 important objects of Greek ceramics. Detlev Kreikenbom and Thomas Mannack were among his students .

His main areas of research were vase painting, mythology and Roman sepulchral art . The contributions to Lower Italian vase painting are of particular importance. After his retirement, Schauenburg published his research in his own series of publications, Studies on Lower Italian Vase Painting . The first part of the series was published in 1999 and the last in 2010 with the fourteenth volume.

Schauenburg was a member of the central management of the German Archaeological Institute from 1969 to 1990. The Società Dante Alighieri appointed him honorary president. Since 1965 he was married to the classical archaeologist Brigitte Freyer-Schauenburg .
