Konrad Hitzl

Konrad Hitzl (born February 15, 1953 in Süplingen , Börde district ; † March 4, 2019 in Kiel ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Konrad Hitzl passed his Abitur in 1971 at the Dilthey-Gymnasium in Wiesbaden . In 1973 he began to study classical archeology, ancient history and Egyptology at the University of Mainz . Between 1976 and 1978 he studied at Heidelberg University and moved back to Mainz in 1978. In 1978 he took part in the excavation of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Tiryns led by Klaus Kilian . In March 1982 he received his doctorate in Mainz with the work The Origin and Development of the Volute Crater from its earliest beginnings to the development of the canonical style in Attic black-figure vase painting , the first monograph on the volute crater . He then worked for six months at the Liebieghaus in Frankfurt am Main , where he worked on the bibliography of the three-volume catalog of the house's sculptures. For his doctorate he was awarded the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute , with the help of which he was able to travel to the Mediterranean region in 1982/83 . At the beginning of 1984, Hitzl became a research assistant at the German Olympic excavation, where he carried out several projects on his own responsibility.

In 1987 Hitzl became a research associate at the University of Tübingen , where he completed his habilitation in 1993 with the thesis The Weights of Greek Times from Olympia . In 1998 he became a senior research assistant and in 2000 a university lecturer. From 2001 to 2004 and 2008 to 2010 he took part in the DAI's exploratory and documentation campaigns in Baalbek . In 2002/03, Hitzl represented the chair for Classical Archeology at the University of Tübingen. From 2003 to 2005 he was involved in a project led by Mustapha Meghraoui , which was supposed to capture all ancient earthquakes in a region from southern Turkey to Jordan , to investigate their effects on the ancient building fabric, and to develop modern restoration and conservation measures. In 2004 he was appointed Associate Professor in Tübingen. In 2006 and 2007, Hitzl was the deputy project manager of the Sigeion research project of the German Research Foundation . From 2007 to 2010 he represented the chair for Classical Archeology at the University of Greifswald , where he was the last university professor in the subject before it expired. He then became a deputy professor at Kiel University .

Hitzl had been a corresponding member of the DAI since December 1995. He dealt with many areas of classical archeology, from architecture to sculpture and ceramics to metrology .
