Studies on Lower Italian vase painting

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The studies of sub-Italian vase painting are a series of scientific books by the classical archaeologist Konrad Schauenburg (1921–2011).

In his studies on Lower-Italian vase painting , Konrad Schauenburg deals with various works of Lower-Italian vase painting - Apulian , Campanian , Lucan , Sicilian and Paestan vase painting . Here he presents vases mainly from private collections, but also unpublished pieces from museum collections. The books are intended for both specialists and interested laypeople, but require some prior knowledge. In addition to the Lower Italian vessels, he also repeatedly uses comparative pieces from Attic vase painting ; the last volume so far is devoted to Attic vase painting.

The books were all published by Ludwig Verlag in Kiel . Between 1999 and 2010, 14 volumes were published, divided into ten books. Some of the books are double volumes. In addition to Schauenburg, Olaf Höckmann has also written a few articles. The books are either divided into vase shapes, motif shapes or the individual regional styles. They are each made accessible via a subject and artist index. A good half of the individual books are reserved for the illustrated part. The majority of the pictures are presented in black and white, a small part of the pictures are shown in color.
