Olaf Höckmann

Olaf Höckmann (born July 10, 1935 in Barth ) is a German prehistorian . His main research area is the history of ancient shipping .

Life

Höckmann studied pre- and early history and was in 1962 at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Münster with the dissertation The anthropomorphic figural sculpture of Southeast European Neolithic and Chalcolithic stone for Dr. phil. PhD.

He worked as an employee (most recently senior curator ) at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum Research Institute for Archeology (RGZM) in Mainz . From 1981 to 1982 he played a leading role in the excavation of Roman ships in Mainz , where a late antique river warship ( Navis lusoria ) was preserved, reconstructed and presented to the public for the first time . From then on he turned increasingly to naval archeology and historical shipping with a focus on antiquity and prehistory. Höckmann was also involved in the investigation of the Roman-era ships discovered in 1986 at Oberstimm Fort .

The monograph Antike Seefahrt (1985) was published by CH Beck . He has written articles in anthologies such as forays through the early high cultures (1994), Nuremberg sheets on archeology (2001/02) and studies on Lower Italian vase painting (2002). He is also the author of articles in archaeological journals such as Studia Troica , Mainzer Archäologische Zeitschrift , Archäologisches Korrespondenzblatt and International Journal of Nautical Archeology , but also in the Cologne Yearbook and in articles on Rhine studies . He was also a member of the editorial team of Skyllis - Journal of Underwater Archeology .

Höckmann gave lectures at international conferences, universities and museums.

He is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). A gift from Höckmann is now in the Prehistory and Early History library within the Leipzig University Library .

He is married to the classical archaeologist Ursula Höckmann .
