history

The development of the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery goes back to the special requirements in the care of war injuries in the First and Second World War. Even after the Second World War, the treatment of facial injuries was one of the main tasks of surgically experienced dentists and double licensed specialists for dental, oral and jaw diseases, who initially had to complete a three-year and later a four-year specialist training. Currently, the further training period to become a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery, which can only begin after completing a degree in human medicine or dentistry, is five years.

The professional group of specialists for dental, oral and jaw diseases was founded on 25/26. March 1950 under its chairman, Wilhelm Schwisow (1901–1980), in Göttingen the Association of Specialists for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases eV However, the establishment of a scientific society was necessary for representation in the scientific advisory board of the Doctors' Day. The German Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was founded on April 29, 1951 by Martin Waßmund , the then director of the maxillofacial clinic at the Rudolf Virchow Hospital . At the time of its establishment on the occasion of a scientific conference in Bad Nauheim , the society consisted of 52 members and was initially called the German Society for Maxillofacial Surgery . In 1972 the name was expanded to include "mouth". As the annual congress date, the date in the spring before or after Pentecost was essentially retained.

The actual founding assembly elected the following board:

Since 1972 the first chairman has been designated as the president, the second chairman as the vice-president, the secretary as the general secretary and the treasurer as the treasurer. Later, due to the increasing national and international activities (1980), a past president and a media officer were added to the board. In addition to these people, who belong to the inner board, there is an extended board - called the committee - to which all former presidents, three non-permanent members of the society, the presidents of the Austrian and Swiss society belong.

Admission to the society as a full member requires a double license as a doctor and dentist as well as a five-year specialist training.

In 2000 the German Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery merged with the professional association of oral and maxillofacial surgeons to bundle scientific and political interests.

The association is a member of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF).
