Hugo Obwegeser

Hugo Lorenz Obwegeser (born October 21, 1920 in Hohenems , Austria ; † September 2, 2017 in Schwerzenbach , Switzerland ) was an Austrian oral surgeon and professor of oral surgery and a specialist author . He was the founder of a surgical method that works without any visible remaining scars on the face .

Life

Obwegeser studied medicine at the University of Innsbruck and specialized in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Graz . He became Director of the Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Zurich (UZH) and published more than 150 scientific papers on oral surgery, some of which are considered standard works .

Obwegeser was recognized worldwide as a pioneer of corrective surgery in the area of ​​jaw misalignments ( dysgnathia operations ). His achievements led to the establishment of the European Association for Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery (EACMFS) in the United States . In India , Obwegeser's achievements paved the way for several thousand successful treatments in the area of cleft lip and palate and craniofacial malformations .

The Hugo Obwegeser Prize , the highest award of the Swiss Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (SGMKG), is named after Obwegeser. Obwegeser was the bearer of the ring of honor in his native Hohenems.

He was the uncle of the physician Joachim Obwegeser.
