The German Society for Sexual Research (DGfS) is the oldest and largest German specialist society for sexology , based at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf and based in Leipzig . The association is a member of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies .

history

It was founded in 1950 at the instigation of the sexologist Hans Giese with the aim of promoting research, teaching and practice in sex science. The first chairman was Hans Bürger-Prinz , a former member of the NSDAP and the SA and during the National Socialist era “hereditary health expert” at the hereditary health court . There he decided on the compulsory sterilization of people who were classified as hereditary illnesses, and advocated that "hereditary illnesses" were eliminated from society.

As an interdisciplinary institution, it houses representatives from a number of different subjects: medicine, psychology, psychoanalysis, pedagogy, sociology, law, history, cultural studies and others.

Scientific and socio-political engagement

Through numerous research reports, expert opinions and public statements, the DGfS has repeatedly influenced legislation and decisions of the highest court in the past. This applies in particular to the reforms of sexual criminal law as well as to the transsexual law , which was created under the significant influence of the then chairman Volkmar Sigusch . Publications by members of the DGfS touch on topics as diverse as the theory of sexuality, the history of sex science, clinical research, women's and gender research, social science research and sex forensic research.

Continuing education and training

A central concern of the association is to improve the treatment of patients with sexual disorders and conflicts. For this purpose, two curricula were developed, on the basis of which further training courses are carried out in various cities. The DGfS also strives intensively to implement qualified sexual science training and further education for psychologists and doctors.

Publication organs

The association has two publication organs:

  • The monograph series Contributions to Sexual Research has been published since 1952 and is currently edited by Martin Dannecker , Hertha Richter-Appelt , Sophinette Becker and Andreas Hill. By July 2015, 100 volumes of the articles were published, the first 70 volumes by 1999 in the Enke publishing house. The articles have been published by Psychosozial-Verlag since 2000 .
  • The interdisciplinary journal for sex research (ZfS) appears four times a year by Thieme-Verlag. It is edited by Peer Briken, Arne Dekker, Nicola Döring, Jürgen Hoyer, Silja Matthiesen, Hertha Richter-Appelt.

In addition, statements to political institutions and courts as well as statements and submissions are published. Among them take the sexual political statements a special place with which the professional society, for example in 2011 for EU child pornography Directive , 2009 to reform the Transsexuellengesetzes or 2004 imposing any subsequently imposed preventive detention took a stand.
