Hertha Richter-Appelt

Hertha Richter-Appelt (* 1949 in Graz ) is a psychologist , psychoanalyst and sex researcher . Until 2014 she was Deputy Director of the Institute for Sexual Research and Forensic Psychiatry at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf . From 2000 to 2003 she was chairwoman of the German Society for Sexual Research and from 2008 was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Psychotherapy for several years .

Career and professional work

Richter-Appelt studied psychology and statistics at the University of Vienna from 1967 to 1973 and received his doctorate there in 1973. Then she was a scholarship holder and research assistant for quantitative methodology at the Psychological Institute of the University of Bern until 1975, from 1975 to 1976 she continued her education in behavioral therapy at the Middlesex Hospital . She then went to the University of Konstanz as a research assistant for clinical psychology from 1976 to 1978 , before moving to the Institute for Sexual Research and Forensic Psychiatry in Hamburg in 1979 .

There she worked from 1981 to 1987 as part of the Collaborative Research Center 115 (Psychosomatic Medicine, Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy) on " Psychoendocrinology of Female Sexuality", habilitated in clinical psychology in 1989 and thus received the Venia legendi . In the 1990s Richter-Appelt conducted research on child sexuality and sexual abuse in childhood . In 1991 Richter-Appelt completed her psychoanalytical training at the German Psychoanalytical Association (DPV), was appointed adjunct professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hamburg in 1997, and in 1999 received her license to practice as a psychological psychotherapist . In the 2000s, her research focused on intersexuality , gender identity, and gender roles . For more than ten years, from 1997 to 2009, Richter-Appelt was Deputy Equal Opportunities Officer at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hamburg and during this time and in this role he received the University's Women's Advancement Award. In 2009 she became equal opportunities officer and stayed in this position until she retired in 2015. In the German Society for Sexual Research (DGfS) she took on several responsibilities. From 1997 to 2000 she was managing director there, then first chairwoman until 2003 and has been a board member since 2005. For the Hamburg region, Richter-Appelt is chair of the advanced training committee of the DGfS. In addition, she is chair of the ethics committee of the Hamburg Chamber of Psychotherapists .
