Hansernst Friedrich Giese (born June 26, 1920 in Frankfurt am Main ; † July 21 or July 22, 1970 (found) near Saint-Paul-de-Vence , France ) was a German physician and sexologist .

Life

Hans Giese, son of constitutional and canon lawyer Friedrich Giese , studied medicine , philosophy and German in Freiburg im Breisgau . He completed his studies in 1943 with the graduation to the Dr. phil. ab (Dissertation The Principle of Polarity in Goethe's Poetry ). On January 1, 1942, he became a member of the NSDAP and heard Martin Heidegger's lectures . Inspired by his thoughts, he gave a lecture on January 28, 1944 on the subject of investigations into the nature of encounter , which is now considered a literary milestone in the emancipation of homosexuals. Unique for the time, he made an attempt to develop a system-compliant, male-union theory of homosexuality ( Bernd-Ulrich Hergemöller ).

After the Second World War he also received his doctorate in medicine (dissertation The forms of male homosexuality - investigations on 130 examples ). In April 1949 he founded the Institute for Sexual Research in Kronberg im Taunus . In October 1949, in collaboration with Kurt Hiller, he participated in the re-establishment of the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee . However, he soon fell out with Hiller. The University of Frankfurt rejected his application for a habilitation with reference to his openly represented homosexuality.

In 1957 he was a scientific advisor for the feature film The Third Sex by director Veit Harlan , who had made anti-Semitic propaganda films in the Third Reich . In a supporting film that was shown in some cities, Giese and Harlan had a conversation about homosexuality. Giese intended to initiate a debate on § 175 , which has been in force since the German Empire , with the central statement: "Homosexuals are different, but not criminals". Although Harlan had been recognized as "exonerated" in several arbitration chamber proceedings , his opponents continued to fight violently. The film in the original version was banned in Germany by the voluntary self-regulation of the film industry . The film distribution company, worried about its investments, had scenes re-shot and edited, whereby the tendency was changed. As different from you and me (§ 175) he came into the cinemas after all.

Giese went to Hamburg in 1958 , where he was able to complete his habilitation and became a professor in 1965. His institute for sex research was integrated into the University Clinic Hamburg-Eppendorf . He sympathized with the libertarian branch of the APO . For the Rowohlt publishing house from 1968 he published the paperback series rororo Sexualität . Giese had a fatal accident in July 1970 during a mountain hike on the Côte d'Azur. According to Volkmar Sigusch , Giese was "the most influential sexologist of the Adenauer era".
