Bernd-Ulrich Hergemöller

Bernd-Ulrich Ludwig Hergemöller (born October 22, 1950 in Münster ) is a German historian .

After graduating from the Münster Ratsgymnasium, Bernd-Ulrich Hergemöller studied Catholic theology, philosophy and history in Münster. In the course of studying theology, he turned away from the faith. In 1978 he received his doctorate from Heinz Stoob on the Golden Bull of Emperor Charles IV of 1356. He completed his habilitation in 1984 with a thesis inspired by Stoob on the subject of Pfaffenkriege in the late medieval Hanseatic region . Then he was a private lecturer in Münster and from 1992 to 1996 university lecturer at the Ruhr University in Bochum . Since 1996 he has held the chair of the Middle Ages department at the Department of History at the University of Hamburg . On November 1, 2012, he was retired for health reasons.

Hergemöller has published around 300 publications in total. One of his main research areas was the urban social history with special consideration of the marginalized groups , another was the imperial and constitutional history of the late Middle Ages. In addition, Hergemöller edited and translated numerous sources on the history of male homosexuality in medieval cities ( Cologne , Münster, Venice , Augsburg , Basel ). "It already has a place of honor in the history of homosexual historiography" ( Patrick Bahners ). In 1998 he published his lexicon man for man .

Hergemöller was an independent councilor of the city of Münster (1984–1987) and a member of the Historical Commission for Mecklenburg .
