Heinz Stoob

Heinz Albert Stoob (born December 3, 1919 in Hamburg , † March 13, 1997 in Münster ) was a German historian and director of the history seminar and the department for Westphalian regional history at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster.

The son of an architect passed his Abitur at the secondary school in St. Georg in 1938 . After working in East Prussia and doing military service, he married in 1942. The marriage resulted in five sons and one daughter. In Hamburg he studied history, philosophy and classical philology. In 1950 he received his doctorate with the study supervised by Hermann Aubin Die Dithmarischen gender associations . From 1952 to 1954, Stoob completed an archive training course in Marburg. In 1958 he completed his habilitation with Otto Brunner at the University of Hamburg with a thesis on the "History of Dithmarschen in the Regent Age". At the same time, he was in the archives of the Hamburg State Church from 1954 to 1964active. In 1964 Stoob was entrusted with the management of the department for Westphalian regional history of the historical seminar at the University of Münster, which he held until his retirement in 1985. Bernd-Ulrich Hergemöller and Ellen Widder were among his academic students .

His research focus was the comparative national and urban history. From 1969 to 1979 Stoob was the director of the newly founded Institute for Comparative Urban History in Münster. From 1964 Stoob was a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . Also deputy chairman from May 5, 1966 to April 24, 1974 and member of the board from April 24, 1974 to April 8, 1986.
