Prosper Duvergier de Hauranne (born August 3, 1798 in Rouen , Seine-Maritime department , † May 20, 1881 in Herry , Cher department ) was a French journalist and politician.

Live and act

Prosper Duvergier de Hauranne had been an advocate of the parliamentary monarchy since his trip to Great Britain in 1820/1821 and became a member of the Cher department in 1831 . In 1827 he married the daughter of Baron Micoud d'Umons. As a liberal, he fought the Restoration of the Bourbons and supported the rule of Louis-Philippe I. After being subjected to repression for his criticism of the king's omnipotence, he approached the positions of Adolphe Thiers and François Guizot and went into opposition.

As one of the organizers of the reform banquets, he signed the indictment against the Guizot Ministry on February 22, 1848 and, after the establishment of the republic, was elected to the Constituante and later to the Commission for drafting the constitution. In both meetings he represented anti-republican rights. In 1849 he fell through the election, but was re-elected to the National Assembly in December 1850. After the coup d'état Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte on December 2, 1851, he was imprisoned for five weeks and temporarily went into exile in Piedmont, henceforth engaged in historical studies, and returned to Paris in 1853.

Upon his return, he withdrew from public life and concentrated fully on his political writings. Since 1824 he had worked for several magazines, including "Le Globe", " La Revue Française " and " Revue des Deux Mondes ". He wrote several comedies with only moderate success, including: Les marineurs écossais ou une matinée (1820), M. Sensible (1821) and Le jaloux sans le savoir . He was friends with Stendhal and Victor Hugo . In 1870, Duvergier de Hauranne was accepted into the Académie française as the successor to the late diplomat Victor de Broglie ( Fauteuil 24 ).
