The large-flowered butterwort ( Pinguicula grandiflora ) is a carnivorous plant from the genus of butterflies ( Pinguicula ), in the section Pinguicula . It was first described by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck in 1789 .

description

The plant forms a winter rosette towards winter and a (larger) summer rosette again towards spring. Fleshy, light green, broadly egg-shaped leaves form a rosette up to 8 cm in diameter, lying flat on the ground. On the surface of the leaf there are stalked glands that secrete a catching mucus, which makes the leaf surface look sticky (greasy). If the prey (z. B. fungus gnats , ants gone or pollen) of the plant on the glue, it is then digested by enzymabsondernde, seated on the leaf surface glands.

From May to August, the large-flowered butterwort blooms on a stalk up to 15 cm high, also covered with glands and digestive glands, growing from the center of the rosette, pink-violet to purple, with a single occurrence in Ireland pure white, in single, zygomorphic , spurred ones Flowers up to 4.5 cm in diameter. The light green or red fruit capsules that develop bear plenty of fine, black seeds.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.

distribution

The large-flowered butterwort is native to Western Europe (Ireland, Spain, France and Switzerland), but extends to Morocco. It prefers mossy, moist, partially shaded locations and loves chalk. If there is too little water, it stops leaf production for the time being, which means it begins a kind of hibernation.

Systematics

The species has often been further subdivided into subspecies, varieties and forms. However, only:

  • Pinguicula grandiflora subsp. grandiflora : It occurs in Spain, Andorra, France, Switzerland and Ireland.
  • Pinguicula grandiflora subsp. rosea (Mutel) Casper , endemic to Grenoble , smaller flower and spur, considerably paler flower.
