Saint-Paul de Vence

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a French city with 3477 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region . Saint-Paul is located in the Arrondissement of Grasse and belongs to the canton of Villeneuve-Loubet . The place covers an area of ​​7.26 square kilometers.

The municipality is a member of the Sophia Antipolis municipal association .

history

During the French Revolution the place was called Sainpaul . The inhabitants call themselves Saint-Paulois .

Saint-Paul is a much-visited medieval town with well-preserved fortifications. These were built 1537–1547 under Francis I , for which 700 houses had to be demolished. The residents were relocated to the newly created neighboring settlement of La Colle.

Many artists and artisans have settled here, including Marc Chagall . He moved to Saint-Paul in 1966 and bequeathed some works to the village where he lived for around 20 years. Particularly worth seeing are a painting entitled “Ma Vie” (My Life) and a mosaic on the theme of “Les Amoureux” (Lovers) in the Maeght Foundation, as well as another mosaic from 1986 on the gable of the community school that is based on an original drawing by Marc Chagall. The artist, who died in 1985 is on the cemetery buried in Saint-Paul. His inconspicuous stone grave in the local cemetery attracts many curious people and art pilgrims to Saint Paul de Vence.

The Fondation Maeght , a modern art museum whose distinctive architecture by Josep Lluís Sert , a student of Le Corbusier, stands in stark contrast to the romantic flair of the medieval village, is located a little outside on the hill La Colline des Gardettes.

The Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs ( Chapel of the White Penitent Monks) was furnished by Jean-Michel Folon . The architect died in 2005 before the construction was completed. Master craftsmen continue his project. The chapel, consecrated in June 2008, is now adorned with the poetic fantasy world of Folon and a huge mosaic , colorful church windows , wall paintings and sculptures on the subject of penances.

At the entrance of the village is the boules court , made famous by players such as Lino Ventura and Yves Montand . There are multilingual introductory boule courses and competitions for amateurs and professionals.

The La Colombe d'Or inn in the old picturesque village was the painter Chagall's favorite retreat in the 1970s. With the sketches of famous guests like Matisse , Calder , Picasso , it resembles a small museum. In the 1970s, it was also a popular hangout not far from Cannes for screen stars like Sophia Loren , Lino Ventura , Yves Montand and others.
