Mougins is a French city in the Alpes-Maritimes department with 19,473 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). Mougins is located 30 km from Nice and nine kilometers north of Cannes . The city is best known as the last long-term residence of Pablo Picasso, as well as for its art galleries and gastronomy.

Museums

  • The Musée de la Photographie - André Villers exhibits photographs by contemporary photographers depicting Picasso.

  • The Musée Maurice Gottlob has a permanent exhibition showing the works of Maurice Gottlob (1885–1970), a former country gendarme in Mougins.

Churches

  • The Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur church is located in the historic town center and was built in the 11th century.
  • The Notre Dame de Vie chapel is located near the La Valmasque nature reserve , not far from the house where Picasso lived.

About 1.3 kilometers southeast of Mougins extends La Valmasque , a predominantly unpopulated, wooded nature reserve and recreational area of ​​around 560 hectares. Adjacent to its northwestern edge is the Étang de Fontmerle , an extensive shallow lake, which is characterized by a diverse flora and fauna. Here you can find the largest lotus colony in Europe ( Indian lotus flower , Nelumbo nucifera ), which was planted in the 1970s. Over 70 species of birds are counted at the Étang de Fontmerle .

  • The French officer Amédée-François Lamy (1858–1900) is a son of the city. He made a name for himself through expeditions to Chad.
