Carros

Carros is a commune with 12,329 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Alpes-Maritimes in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . The municipality is located in the Arrondissement of Grasse and belongs to the canton of Nice-3 . It is also part of the Nice Côte d'Azur metropolis .

geography

Carros is located above the valley of the River Var , about twenty kilometers northwest of Nice .

history

The area around Carros was already populated in the pre-Roman, Iron Age epoch, in the period from the sixth to the first century BC. With the conquest of southern Gaul by the troops of Rome, the settlement here became vicus lavaratensis . The strategic location above the Vartal was used from the 12th century. The Castrum Carrossi appears in the sources. The lords of the castle were supporters of the Order of Malta.
