Repubblica di Cospaia

For a long time the district of Cospaia was an independent republic. When Pope Eugene IV sold land to the Republic of Florence in 1440 , part of the land was not mentioned in the deed of purchase, so the residents immediately declared themselves independent. The independent area was then used for smuggling goods and made arable for tobacco cultivation. In 1826 the area (3.3 square kilometers) was then divided between Tuscany and the Papal States.
