In 1328 the place was badly damaged by an earthquake. After a rebellion against Norcia, the city was destroyed by them in 1528. Five years later, with the permission of Pope Paul III , the castle was built . rebuilt on condition of a reconciliation with Norcia. After the Napoleonic occupation , the place was declared an independent municipality by Pope Pius VII . After the unification of Italy , the population increased from approx. 3050 to approx. 3550 in 1921. After that, the population fell continuously to approx. 820 inhabitants until 2001. In 1997 the place was hit by another earthquake, in which the old town suffered severe damage.
