Filippino Lippi (* around 1457 in Prato ; † April 18, 1504 in Florence ) was an Italian Renaissance painter . With the restless lines and the sometimes gloomy coloring of his late work, he was a forerunner of Italian mannerism . The first name Filippino is a later designation of the art historians to distinguish it from his father; in his day he was called Filippo and was only called that.

Life

Lippi learned to paint in the painting workshop of his father Fra Filippo Lippi , after his death in 1469 in the workshop of Fra Don Diamante , a friend of his father's. His early work was influenced by the painter Sandro Botticelli , with whom he had worked since 1472 and who had been a student of his father. In addition, his works have been heavily inspired by Flemish painting. From 1482 to 1484 Filippino Lippi completed Masaccio's frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel of the Santa Maria del Carmine Church in Florence. For a while he stayed in Rome, where he studied antiquity. From 1489 to 1493 he created the frescoes in the Carafa chapel of the Roman church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva , at that time the Roman church of the Florentines. His main client was Lorenzo il Magnifico in Florence, his specialty was fresco painting.

“Filippo” was highly praised by his contemporaries and described as a polite and amiable comrade and fellow citizen. He was considered very sensitive, but humorous. He died of an acute sore throat. He left a large fortune and several houses to his three young sons and his wife Maddalena di Piero Paolo Monti, whom he married in 1497.
