The historically valuable noble palaces on Strade Nuove (Italian: New Streets ), including the Palazzo Bianco , are the core of the Palazzi dei Rolli . The Strade Nuove and its Palazzi dei Rolli have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2006 .

In Palazzo Bianco is one of the most important art galleries of Genoa, and with the neighboring Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Doria Tursi , it forms a Museumsagglomerat in the old town.

history

The Palazzo Bianco was built by Luca Grimaldi between 1530 and 1540 . In 1658 the palace became the property of the De Franchi family and in 1711 it was given to Maria Durazzo Brignole Sale by Frederico De Franchi .

From 1714 to 1716 major restoration work was carried out on the building to adapt it to the taste of the time. As a result, the palazzo also got its name, based on its white exterior facade.

In 1899 the last representative of this important Genoese family and heiress of the palace, Maria Brignole Sale De Ferrari , Duchess of Galliera, ceded the palace to the municipality, which turned it into a public museum.

The art gallery

After 1887 the gallery was enriched by the purchase of numerous private collections. The quality of the art gallery improved through the restoration of the building after the Second World War , carried out mainly by Orlando Grosso, Caterina Marcenaro and Franco Albini , and through the transfer of sculptures and frescoes from other museums.

The art gallery offers a panorama of European paintings from the 12th to 17th centuries, with an emphasis on Genoese, Flemish, French and Spanish artists. 16th century works include paintings by Paolo Veronese , painter of the Venetian School, and Filippino Lippi of Florence . Among the Danish and Flemish paintings from the 16th to 17th centuries, works by Rubens (e.g. Venus and Mars ) and van Dyck ( Vertumnus and Pomona ) stand out. Well-known Spanish artists at the gallery are Zurbaran , Murillo and Ribera .

Genoese artists represented in the Palazzo Bianco include Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione , Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo , Bernardo Strozzi , Valerio Castello , Domenico Piola , Paul Gerolamo Piola , Gregorio De Ferrari and Alessandro Magnasco .
