Gerard David

Gerard David (* around 1460 in Oudewater near Gouda ; † August 13, 1523 in Bruges ) was an old Dutch painter.
Life
David was the son of the craftsman Jan David from Oudewater. In 1483 David came to Bruges and entered the local painters' guild as a student in January of the following year. When he joined the guild, David was already considered a student of Hans Memling . In addition to his artistic career, he was also active in local politics in Bruges. In 1488 the guild named him as a jury for the city council. After that, David held this office in 1495/96 and 1498/99. After the death of his master Hans Memling, Gerard David became the official city painter of Bruges.
Shortly before 1500 in Bruges, David married Cornelia Cnoop, a daughter of the head of the local goldsmiths' guild. He had a daughter with her. Through this marriage, but also through his art, he became very wealthy over the years. This enabled him to lend a larger amount to the Carmelites of Zion Monastery in 1521 .
In 1503 David became a member of the lay society of Our Lady of the Dry Tree in Bruges . In Antwerp he was registered as a master in the Liggeren of the St. Luke guild in 1515 . David's artistic work showed its own style at an early stage, although references to Jan van Eyck , Rogier van der Weyden and Hugo van der Goes are clearly recognizable. Stylistic similarities to David's style can be found in the work of the master of the Andre Madonna . Gerard David died on August 13, 1523 in Bruges at the age of almost 70. Of his altarpieces, the baptism of Christ in the Academy and the Descent from the Cross in the Church of St. Basile in Bruges, a Madonna with holy virgins and angels in the Museum in Rouen and a Christ on the Cross in the Berlin Museum have been preserved.
