Master of the André Madonna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An old Dutch painter who is unknown by name and who painted a “Madonna with an inkwell” around 1498 or 1520 is referred to as the master of the André Madonna . It shows Mary teaching the Christ Child to write. The master's emergency name was given to him after the place where this picture was kept, the Jacquemart-André collection in Paris.

The painting Virgin and Child under Angels (around 1500) is also assigned to the master of the André Madonna . The motif of this painting is based on the Madonna at the fountain (1439) by the Dutch master Jan van Eyck , but, unlike van Eyck , it sits in front of the city backdrop of Bruges . There are several variants of this Madonna portrait, which - like the Virgin and Child under Angels in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection in Madrid - are attributed by art experts to the master of the André Madonna . However, by pointing out differences between some of these images, the experts leave open the possibility that these e.g. B. could also have originated in the immediate vicinity of Gerard David . The painting Virgin and Child with Four Angels (between 1510–1515), which has the same motif of the Virgin and Child under Angels, comes from him and shows a city view of Bruges from the same point of view in the background.
