The palace has been the seat of the municipal administration since 1848, but it also houses a valuable art collection and, together with the Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Rosso, forms a museum core in the heart of Genoa.

The building was commissioned by Niccolò Grimaldi in early 1565 and built by Domenico and Giovanni Ponsello . The palace was built on three parcels of land, making it the most imposing palazzo on Via Garibaldi . In 1597, under Gio Andrea Doria , two large loggias were built on both sides of the main building.

Significant for the uniqueness of the construction is the mention of Alexandre Dumas in Genova la superba (1841) that the architecture of the palace was often incorrectly attributed to Michelangelo .
