Costacciaro is an Italian municipality with 1143 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Perugia in the Umbria region .

Location of Costacciaro in the province of Perugia

The community extends over about 41 km². It is located about 38 km northeast of Perugia on the border with the Marche region in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in Zone E, 2 403 GR / G.

The place is near the mountain Monte Cucco ( 1566  m slm ) on the historical Via Flaminia and today's Strada Statale 3 Via Flaminia and is part of the Comunità montana dell'Alto Chiascio .

The districts (Frazioni) include Costa San Savino ( 599  m slm , approx. 140 inhabitants, is approx. 5 km north of the main town) and Villa Col de 'Canali ( 559  m slm , approx. 250 inhabitants, is approx. 2 km north from the main town).

The neighboring municipalities are Fabriano ( AN ), Gubbio , Sassoferrato (AN), Scheggia e Pascelupo and Sigillo .

history

The former Roman station Castrum Costacciarii was acquired by Gubbio in the 13th century . With Gubbio it came first in 1384 to the Montefeltro family , who were close to the Counts of Urbino . The Della Rovere family ruled the area from 1508 to 1631 , after which it became part of the Papal States . The fortifications were expanded by Francesco di Giorgio at the end of the 15th century .

At the time of the unification of Italy in 1861, about 2150 inhabitants lived in the place. By 1921, the population grew to around 3,600, after which the number of inhabitants fell steadily to around 1,300 in 2010.

  • Chiesa della Misericordia , church in the town center. Contains the work Cristo Morto tra la Madonna e Santa Maria Maddalena from 1582. It was restored in 1855 and 2001.
  • Museo Laboratorio del Parco del Monte Cucco , Museum of the Monte Cucco mountain in the former church of San Marco in the center, which opened in 1999.
  • Palazzo Comunale , today's town hall, 13th century.
  • Torre Civica , 13th century tower that also serves as the city gate.
  • Rivellino , also Rocca del Cassero , also called Rocca di Costacciaro , fortress ruin, which was expanded by Francesco di Giorgio in 1477 and is located on the southwestern outskirts.
  • Antico frantoio dell'olio , 17th century oil mill, now a museum.
  • San Rocco , church just outside the town center near Borgo San Rocco on Via Flaminia.
  • Madonna delle Grazie , church in the district of Costa San Savino.
