Corciano is an Italian municipality with 21,469 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Perugia in Umbria and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).
geography
The place is about eight kilometers west of Perugia between Lake Trasimeno and the Tiber .
The districts include Capocavallo , Castelvieto , Ellera-Chiugiana (Chiugiana-La Commenda), Mantignana , Migiana , San Mariano and Solomeo .
The neighboring communities are Magione (west) and Perugia (east).
history
The place is said to have been founded by an ally of Odysseus , Coragino . In fact, the area was populated as early as the Neolithic. The first fortified residential complexes can be classified between the 3rd century and the 1st century BC. In 1136, the bishop of Perugia was granted rule over the Castrum de Corciano by Pope Innocent II in a document . Francis of Assisi is said to have visited the place. In 1364 the place was devastated and plundered by the White Company (Compania Bianca) of Cardinal Albornoz . Eventually the place came under the rule of Perugia. Until the unification of the Kingdom of Italy Corciano remained as Perugia part of the Papal States .
In 2012, Corciano, together with the Romanian city of Sighișoara, was awarded the European Prize for their outstanding efforts towards European integration.
