Umbertide is a small town in the Umbrian province of Perugia in Italy with 16,598 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

The municipality is located on the left bank of the Tiber , in a green hilly landscape, which is dominated by the image of the highest point in the area, the mountain Monte Acuto with its 926 meters. The city is 247 meters above sea level and the area is about 200 km². The place is about 25 km north of the provincial and regional capital Perugia in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in Zone E, 2 192 GG. The churches of Umbertide belong to the diocese of Città di Castello and the Archdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve .

history

The place was first documented in 1189 as Fracta filiorum Uberti . On January 25, 1863, the place name Fratta was changed to Umbertide . The place was under Perugia from 1189, when Ugolino di Uguccione donated his lands to Perugia. In 1362 the place received its statutes, which were confirmed in 1521. The historic town center was badly damaged during the French occupation and during the Second World War .

  • Santa Maria della Reggia , church just outside the city wall, built from 1559. Includes the painting Trasfigurazione , dated 1578, by Niccolò Circignani .
  • San Bernardino , former church in Borgo Inferiore , built in 1426 and restored in 1768.
  • Santa Croce , former church in Borgo Inferiore , built in 1610. Today it is a museum and contains Luca Signorelli 's Deposizione della Croce , created in 1516.
  • San Francesco , church in the Borgo Inferiore , 14th century.
  • Santa Maria della Pietà , church north of the town center, built in 1486. Contains works attributed to the Pinturicchio .
  • Abbazia di San Salvatore di Montecorona . The monastery was founded by St. Romuald as a Camaldolese abbey around 1008. The three-nave church was restored in the 1970s . In the raised choir there is a ciborium from the 8th century. The five-aisled crypt is actually a "lower church" , for whose columns and capitals ancient and early medieval building materials were used.
  • Santi Cassiano e Ippolito , church on the road to Verna, first mentioned in 1126 in a document from Pope Honorius II .
  • San Pietro , church in the Montecastelli district, built between 1890 and 1897.
  • Madonna del Sasso , church in Polgeto, 12th century.
  • San Bartolomeo dei Fossi , today's church ruins on the road to Preggio, which were built around 1350.
  • Madonna delle Grazie , church in the Preggio district, 15th century.
  • Santissima Trinità in San Francesco , church in the Preggio district, 12th century, first mentioned in 1163 as Canonica SS Trinità de Pejo.
