Deruta is an Italian commune with 9587 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Perugia in the Umbria region and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

geography

Deruta is located about 15 kilometers south of Perugia on a hill above the Tiber Valley.

The districts include Casalina, Castelleone, Pontenuovo, Ripabianca, San Nicolò di Celle and Sant'Angelo di Celle.

The neighboring municipalities are Bettona , Collazzone , Marsciano , Perugia and Torgiano .

Economy and culture

Deruta is a center of ceramics whose beginnings go back to the Middle Ages and which is still largely hand-painted today. The Deruta ceramics workshops made the arches of the chapel in the Palazzo dei Priori and in the sacristy of the Basilica of San Pietro in Perugia and worked in the Chapel of the Baglioni in Spello .
